Supporting Students in Distress Workshop
Tuesday 14 May 9:30 until 15:00
University of Sussex Campus : A108
Speaker: Plinth House
Part of the series: Staff Development
Target Audience: Teaching staff and those with student facing roles who may have to support students in distress. Please come along!
The focus of this training session is on helping colleagues to feel confident when interacting with distressed students. A student’s distress may feel overwhelming, tempting us to overstep the boundaries of our role, or to avoid the interaction altogether.
In the session, we will explore practical scenarios and skills for getting the balance right - connecting with a student’s distress, while ensuring that our support remains appropriate. Part of the session will also focus on students who are potentially at a higher level of risk, such as a student who mentions feeling suicidal.
The session will be provided by a specialist external provider, Plinth House, who have collaborated with Sussex colleagues to tailor this session to our specific needs.
The session will run 09:30 until 13:00, followed by a free lunch. Wendy Carey, the University’s staff wellbeing manager, will be offering an optional follow-up session from 2pm for any colleagues who may wish to talk through issues that arose from the training.
