As part of One World Week, the Business School hosted its annual Global Fair earlier this month in Jubilee, celebrating the unique cultures within our university, whilst raising awareness of global issues and highlighting international opportunities for our diverse Sussex students and staff.
This year showcased performances from several talented Business School students, including a classical Bharatnatyam dance piece from Southern India, performed by Strategy and Marketing student Manasi Barmecha, as well as dance performances from the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA). Students also enjoyed a performance from a local Flamenco singer and guitarist duo.
After the performances, guests were invited to the International Societies Fair where they could sample foods from around the globe, and discover more about our international societies and opportunities at Sussex. We would like to thankall of the societies for taking part in this event including:
Chinese Students and Scholars' Association
Malaysian, Bruneian, Singaoporean
Strategy and Marketing student and performer Manasi Barmecha said:
“The piece I choreographed was a classical dance form from South India called Bharatnatyam. I focused on the abhinaya which is the more expressive part of the dance, a combination of the experience (bhava) and the sentiment (rasa). My dance was to celebrate the onset of spring, reverence for nature and a playfulness of life-things which all cultures in the world appreciate.
“Performing at the global fair reminded me how much I love dancing and the unbelievable ability of music and expressions to unite people across borders. A smile means a smile in all languages. A flower is a flower in all countries.”
The Global Fair is held annually during March as part of One World Sussex, which is run by the Student Union and the Student Engagement team, and takes place in Spring term every year.
The university recognises the need for more inclusive events and now extends the ‘One World’ ethos to incorporate any events and initiatives which take place throughout the year that celebrate our global diversity at Sussex.
