Managing Export Coopetition Activities: Evidence from the Global Wine Industry

Abstract:
Relatively little is known about how exporters can manage coopetition, which refers to cooperation among competitors. This study investigates the relationship between export coopetition activities and export performance. Using survey data and archival information from 2012 organizations across seventeen countries, the findings show that export coopetition activities enhance export performance, although this link is negatively moderated by export competitive intensity. The results further reveal a positive three-way interaction effect between export coopetition activities, export competitive intensity, and export experience on export performance, while industry experience does not show the same effect. These insights highlight that decision makers must use their export specific knowledge carefully to withstand volatile competitive environments and reduce potential downsides. The study also advances understanding of the resource-based view as a theory for explaining the management of cooperation and competition in export markets, offering new directions for future research.
