We recently welcomed Sussex alumni to a private view of perhaps one of the best-known visual arts prizes in the world: the Turner Prize 2023. Hosted by the spectacular gallery, Towner Eastbourne, guests were treated to an exclusive preview of the work of this year’s shortlisted Turner Prize artists.
Sussex is proud to have collaborated with Towner Eastbourne by acting as Education Partner for the Turner Prize 2023, developing an ambitious arts education programme that brings the Prize to life within schools across the region as well as on campus.
Vice-Chancellor, Sasha Roseneil used her welcome address to acknowledge the significance of the occasion and its impact on the cultural life of the Sussex coast, as well as on the post-pandemic recovery of the region’s arts and education.
Noelle Collins, curator of the Turner Prize then talked guests through the works and artists that feature in the shortlist for the prestigious award.
We are honoured to have two Turner Prize winners amongst our alumni community: Jeremy Deller, who received the award in 2004, and Helen Cammock, who was among the joint winners of 2019. Both artists continue to work with Sussex, and Helen recently accepted our commission for a piece of public art to go on display at our new Student Centre.
