David Ruebain and Gavin Mensah-Coker in interview
Earlier this summer, Black at Sussex was proudly spotlighted at the BARCO Carnival event held in July, where Gavin Mensah-Coker, Chair of the Black at Sussex Steering Group, delivered a short but powerful speech reflecting on the programme’s purpose, progress and impact. His remarks highlighted the importance of sustained visibility, cultural celebration and institutional accountability in creating meaningful change for Black staff and students at Sussex.
The event also featured an insightful interview with Gavin Mensah-Coker and David Ruebain, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Culture, Equality and Inclusion, who spoke candidly about the journey of Black at Sussex, the lessons learned so far and the road ahead.
The BARCO Carnival provided a vibrant and affirming space to connect Black cultural work in the community with the university’s ongoing equity efforts. It was a proud moment of recognition and celebration for the programme - rooted in community, driven by purpose.
