New Lead Chaplain announced

Last updated: Monday, 30 January 2023
The University has appointed James Croft as our new Lead Chaplain, following the recent retirement of Revd Chris McDermott.
James comes to Sussex from St. Louis, Missouri, where he led a Humanist congregation which was open to all regardless of their religious beliefs.
He brings years of experience providing pastoral care and counselling to a religiously diverse community, and a passion for reimagining religion and spirituality to fit the way we live today.
James said: “I was born and raised in London so I’m delighted to be able to return to my home country, and to such a beautiful campus.
“Sussex is well-known as a university where you can be yourself. It’s home to a diverse mix of all faiths and none. And all of us, whether we’re religious or not, grapple with existential questions common to the experience of being human.
“We all sometimes need someone to help us make sense of our lives, and to help us define and live up to our highest values. So, it’s important that our provision for religious, spiritual, and ethical life represents the diversity of our community.
“I’m looking forward to reaching out to our community and promoting the Meeting House as a welcoming, safe space for all.”
The Meeting House at Sussex is open for everyone as a space for contemplation, companionship, and worship, and a multi-faith team of chaplains representing different religious and spiritual communities offer support to every member of the university.
Whether you are religious, non-religious, or still finding your way, you are welcome at the Meeting House. See details of the available services.
