You will learn the following topics:
- the structure and function of the brain at the anatomical, cellular and molecular levels
- the way that drugs interact with the brain
- the development of the brain as well as its degeneration and the changes accompanying ageing
- the organisation and function of the sensory and motor pathways and the biological bases of pain and the diseases of motor control
- the neuroanatomy and neurochemistry of learning and memory and of dementias
- the biological and psychosocial bases of major clinical syndromes in psychiatry
- the biological and psychosocial bases of common neurological diseases.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding, at an appropriate level, of the function of the brain, how neurons communicate and how drugs influence brain function; show an appreciation of the organisation and function of the sensory and motor pathways; the pathways responsible for learning, memory and the generation of emotion; and be aware of the biological and psychosocial bases of major psychiatric syndromes and of common neurological diseases.
- Analyse and evaluate research information, and on the basis of this to generate ideas about the aetiologies and treatment of the relevant normal and abnormal conditions
- Demonstrate the ability to generate research questions and plan the appropriate experiments to test them
