PhD project

The studentship has a specific focus, in line with the aims of the funding organisation; this is to improve understandings of how best to track the social and emotional development of children over time, particularly those who have experienced trauma. As part of the doctorate, the successful applicant will take forward the development of the ‘Sea Scale’ – a short standardised measure of social and emotional adjustment which can be used by teachers and practitioners. The scale was developed in collaboration between Sussex and the Mulberry Bush and has already been the subject of other studies. The applicant will explore the Sea Scale’s strengths and limitations, relate it to other similar measures, and explore how a strength-based approach might influence and shape thinking and practice about children’s social and emotional capacities. There will also be the opportunity to consider what alternative approaches might provide additional or different benefit (including ways in which children themselves could make to assessments of their development). A mixed-methods methodology will be expected, to ensure that all the relevant stakeholders are consulted in the development and critical evaluation of these tools; this will include the voices of children, parents/carers, and practitioners. The doctoral proposal will be shaped by the student in collaboration with the Mulberry Bush and the doctoral supervisors, and there will be three reviews per year with this team. The primary supervisor will be Professor Michelle Lefevre, a social worker and psychotherapist, who leads the Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth at Sussex. The second supervisors will be Professor Robin Banerjee and Dr Helen Drew, from the School of Psychology.
