ESW BAME Doctoral Research Studentship (2021)

In support of our commitment to widening participation in higher education at all levels, we are concerned to address the current under-representation at the University of Sussex of Doctoral students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.

What you get

The studentships cover tuition fees (£4,407 a year for 2020-21) and provide a tax-free stipend for living expenses at UK Research Council rate (for 2020-21, this is £15,609 a year outside London and £17,069 within London) for up to four years full time or six years part time.

In order to take active steps to address this under-representation, the studentship will be awarded to an applicant from a BAME background whose proposed research demonstrates a commitment to social justice issues related to education and/or social work and makes a clear contribution to addressing the barriers and discrimination facing marginalised groups.  

Eligibility

The award is for:

    • new students beginning their PhD studies in Autumn 2021
    • candidates from a BAME background, as defined by the Higher Education Statistics Agency [Black or Black British – Caribbean; Black or Black British – African; Other Black background; Asian or Asian British – Indian; Asian or Asian British – Pakistani; Asian or Asian British – Bangladeshi; Chinese; Other Asian background; Mixed – White and Black Caribbean; Mixed – White and Black African; Mixed – White and Asian; Other mixed background; Arab]
    • candidates who qualify for Home fees
    • candidates whose proposed research clearly addresses social justice issues and can contribute to addressing barriers and discrimination facing marginalised groups.

How to apply

Apply for a place on either the Education or Social Work PhD programme for September 2021

  • You need to apply online to the PhD course linked to the department of your chosen supervisor (Education, Social Work) and enter “ESW BAME studentship” in the sources of funding box. 
  • Please attach your project proposal, your CV, degree certificates and transcripts (undergraduate and postgraduate, and English language qualifications (if relevant). Guidance on writing a proposal is given here: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/study/phd/apply/tips-research-degrees/research-proposal. You will also need to nominate 2 referees as part of the application process
  • You will also need to identify a potential supervisor from the School of Education and Social Work and state their name(s) at the relevant point of application

  • As indicated above, the focus of the proposal should demonstrate a commitment to social justice and equity, as well as making a clear contribution to addressing the barriers and discrimination faced by marginalised groups. 

Submit an abstract

  • After you have been formally accepted on the PhD programme, you must then submit an abstract of your research proposal by email to eswpgradmin@sussex.ac.uk. The abstract must be no more than 500 words and be written in a way that can be understood by a non-specialist. It should include a statement of support by the main supervisor. *Shortlisted candidates will be notified after the closing date.

Selection process

  • Successful candidates will have a strong academic background and/or evidence of prior experiential learning relevant to research and/or the proposed study.
  • All proposals will be reviewed by a panel of ESW doctoral leaders and its EDI Officer.
  • Your application will be considered on the basis of:
    • your PhD programme application (including a research proposal)
    • your abstract
  • No candidate can take up the award unless they are also offered a place on the relevant doctoral programme.
