R M Phillips PhD Studentship: Health care technology diffusion in the developed and developing world (2021)

The University of Sussex Business School is delighted to offer a fully funded, full time PhD studentship in the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU). The preferred start date would be 20 September 2021, although a later start date can also be accommodated.

What you get

The award is for 4 years full time and covers a full waiver of tuition fees at either the Home/EU or the Overseas rate, as applicable, plus a stipend at the prevailing UK Research Council rate, currently £15,609 per year.

We are seeking an exceptional student with a Master’s degree from a leading university to study with our health care policy group within the Science Policy research Unit.  The selected candidate with explore how organisations develop technologies for healthcare both in the developed and developing world, and what role science, innovation, organisational heterogeneity and policy environments play in their diffusion.  This may include, but is not limited to, the role new technologies such as tele-medicine solutions and wearables, big data and other emerging information technologies may play in shaping improved patient outcomes. We are particularly interested in students that have an interdisciplinary research interest in addressing improved health care provision in the post pandemic environment, including the emerging ecosystems of population health surveillance technologies.  The selected candidate will be part of a vibrant healthcare policy group within SPRU, the Business School and the University of Sussex, which have recently been successful with numerous major grants in a number of policy areas. 

The Research Area

Your PhD proposal should address health care technology diffusion in the developed and developing world. If successful, you will work primarily with SPRU researchers that conduct research in health care and science policy.

The School

SPRU, which is part of the EQUIS and AMBA accredited University of Sussex Business School, was founded in 1966 and is now one of the largest and most successful innovation studies centres that focuses on problem-focused, interdisciplinary research of policy and managerial relevance.   Our high-impact research combines expertise in innovation, development, energy policy, business and sustainability, with a strong focus on real-world application and public policy. Our staff and students collaborate regularly with various widely recognized institutes and research groups across the University of Sussex and around the world.  The School is ranked in the Top 10 in the UK for Business and Economics (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020) and third in the UK for research income 2015-2018 (Chartered Association of Business Schools). Currently, we employ around 200 faculty and support 140 PhD students.

Eligibility

Applications are welcomed from both UK and non-UK students with no restriction on nationality; however, those who are currently undertaking a PhD at the Business School are ineligible to apply.

To be eligible you must have, or expect to have, a Master’s degree or its equivalent in a relevant subject, plus prior research experience in a relevant field.
