PhD Scholarship in Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence (2020)

Fully funded PhD studentship in the Department of Informatics, University of Sussex, UK.

What you get

Three year scholarship.

£15,009 stipend p.a., plus full UK/EU fees.

You will receive a tax free stipend at a standard rate of £15,009 per year for three years. In addition, your fees will be waived for three years (at the UK/EU rate).

PhD project

Applications are invited for a funded full-time three year PhD in Artificial Intelligence or Cognitive Science (stipend and fees).  The PhD will be supervised by Professor Peter Cheng and will be associated with the EPSRC project entitled ‘Automating Representation Choice for AI Tools’ (Rep2Rep).  The PhD project will focus on the development and evaluation in one of the areas topics:

  • Diagrammatic intelligent tutoring systems.
  • Measurement of representation competency in problem solving.
  • Tools for modelling and designing notational and diagrammatic systems.
  • Diagrammatic notations for logic. 

The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic team of researchers with expertise in representational systems, cognitive learning analytics, cognitive experiments, eye-movement recording, verbal and graphical protocol analysis, computational cognitive modelling, tactile interaction, AI and diagrams, and tutoring system design. 

You should have (or be about to obtain) a strong 2:1 degree or an MSc in cognitive science, computer science/informatics/AI, human computer interaction, psychology, or a cognate discipline and be able demonstrate a genuine interest in cognitive science and AI research.  The School of Engineering and Informatics and the University’s Doctoral School provides an extensive range of training courses to support doctoral researchers successful completion of their degrees.

The start date of the PhD is September 2020.
