PhD project

In the next ten years, acoustic metamaterials will have a deep effect on the way we design, experience and deliver sound. As a result, physical, commercial and subjective key elements such as sound transmission loss, weight, portability, modularity, manufacturing methods and costs, frequency spectrum, tone, range and psychoacoustic perception will be deeply affected: new opportunities await.

In this project, which falls under the remit of Human Computer Interaction (HCI), we will explore how acoustic metamaterials can augment creative tools (e.g. music instruments, speakers, amplifiers, stage monitors) for recording studios and music venues. We will work together with musicians and industrial partners to explore whether and how acoustic metamaterials can alter our perception in immersive experiences. We will explore a new way to manage sound and noise, akin to how we manage light.
