Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarship Programme: 'From Sensation and Perception to Awareness'. (2019)

The University of Sussex invites applications for PhD studentship awards within its Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarship Programme entitled “From Sensation and Perception to Awareness”. This research programme brings together researchers and doctoral students from across the Schools of Life Sciences, Informatics, Psychology, Media Film & Music, and Brighton and Sussex Medical School with the ultimate aim of advancing our understanding of the interactions between sensing, perception, and awareness in humans, animals, and machines.

What you get

The award covers:

  •  Home/EU fees for 3 years
  • A tax free living allowance at the standard Research Council rate – currently £14,777 per annum – for three years
  • Further financial support for training and research expenses, such as conference trips and experimental costs
  • A chance to be considered for a 12 month postdoctoral research fellowship, available only to completing Leverhulme scholars

PhD project

Projects are detailed on the Programme Website and are offered for a September 2019 start across three themes:

  • Human-computer interaction and digital arts
  • Human cognitive and computational neuroscience
  • Sensory Neuroscience

You may apply for a a listed project or approach one of the supervisors mentioned in the "Student-led projects" section to propose your own project within and across the following disciplines:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Physiology
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Robotics
  • Philosophy
  • Digital humanities
  • Music

Eligibility

Applicants should be UK or EU citizens (the Scholarship does not cover Overseas fees) and should have/expect to have at least a 2:1 undergraduate honours degree. A master's degree in a relevant discipline is strongly desirable.

Applicants must also have a willingness to participate in interdisciplinary training and seminars relating to 'sensation, perception, and awareness'.

Number of scholarships available

Up to 8 scholarships are available for an autumn 2019 start.

How to apply

 To apply for one of the advertised projects, or to propose your own, you should apply for a PhD place at Sussex using the online PhD application form.

If applying for one of the advertised projects, you should use the advert as a starting point, and develop this into a more detailed research proposal.  Guidance on writing a research proposal can be found here.

On the application form, choose the PhD course linked to the department of your chosen supervisor (e.g. Psychology; Life Sciences) and enter 'Leverhulme' in the sources of funding box.

Your completed application should include your project proposal, your CV and any other information requested e.g. degree certificates and transcripts and English language qualifications.

You will also need to complete the Leverhulme Funding application.  This must be returned to Leverhulme@sussex.ac.uk
