Local Lives: Identifying Global Studies (0001F)

Autumn teaching

This module introduces you to ways of understanding the changing world around you, drawing on the disciplines of Anthropology, Geography, International Development and International Relations that make up the School of Global Studies. It also enables you to explore the interdisciplinary perspectives that arise from bringing these disciplines into dialogue with each other, and with others in the Social Sciences.

In the Autumn Term, you will explore how each of the disciplines help to better understand identity. Each week you will look at different aspects of identity (such as class, gender and ethnicity, among others), examining how our unique sense of self is shaped by wider social forces. You will also explore how each of the global disciplines differs and yet overlaps in the approach to the study of identity and intersectionality.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 117 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
