Maths and Data Analysis for Chemists (G1140)

Autumn teaching

This module aims to ensure your mathematical knowledge is good enough that you can apply it, with confidence, to scientific problems in your other modules.

We introduce you to the concepts of accuracy and precision. You gain problem-solving abilities and learn the art of translating a scientific problem into a well-structured mathematical one. You'll be confident with the mathematics, and able to see its relevance in the context of chemistry. You also develop an appreciation for the sources of and propagation of experimental errors.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 35 hours of contact time and about 115 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2022/23. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
