Discovering Role Models: Peer-Led Mentoring in Schools BACY (X3256)

The Role Models Project is a peer-led mentoring project, training students to create and facilitate workshops for groups of young people (aged 12-15) at BACA (Brighton Aldridge Community Academy), the local secondary school. The aim of the Role Models Project is to provide young people in the local community with role models, a safe supported space to be listened to and ask questions, and an appropriate environment in which to engage with important PSHE topics. We deliver workshops with a 1-to-1 ratio of Sussex students to young people, in order to enable the peer-mentoring element, rethink traditional education models, and focus on small group work and 1-to-1 conversations.
On this module you will be asked to bring your own passion, ideas, and reflect on your own experience, values and “what you wish you’d known”. You will receive training to build your skills and confidence in participatory facilitation and working with young people, as well as the project’s social pedagogic theoretical framework, topic specific training around mental health and wellbeing, and essential training around safeguarding and boundaries. This will enable you to then combine academic learning with practical application, in order to research, design and deliver workshops as a team to the young people at BACA, and become involved in a national dialogue on PSHE education.
In this Discovering Role Models module, Mental Health and Wellbeing will be the broad focus of the workshops that you will create. However this is an open theme under which it will be your role to consider and decide what topics are important to you, reflect on "what you wish you’d known", research contemporary approaches, and - most importantly - listen to the young people, in order to create workshops that are relevant, interesting and useful for them. Topics in the past have included everything from emotional literacy to supporting your peers to body image ideals on Instagram!
This 15 credit elective is assessed by a 2000 word portfolio. You can take take the follow on Spring term 'Developing Role Models: Mentoring' elective, which will allow you to develop your experience and skills even further. Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 89 hours of contact time and about 61 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We’re planning to run this module in the academic year 2021/22. However, there may be changes to this module in response to COVID-19, or due to staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. It may not be possible to take some module combinations due to timetabling constraints. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
