Making History A (V1000)

Autumn teaching

This module introduces the different ways in which we can approach and understand the past in order to illuminate and enrich our understanding of the present. It adopts a thematic approach, drawing together perspectives from historians, philosophers, art historians and American Studies scholars to reflect on the different ways we can engage with similar types of historical subject matter including war, empire, race and gender.

Through your study of a wide variety of texts and objects—from photographs to paintings, manuscripts to manifestos--you will become familiar with the central issues faced by scholars when they attempt to uncover and interpret the past - particularly the complexity of the historical record and the problematic nature of evidence. You will also learn how to analyse sources critically and to develop your own critical understanding of the past.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 117 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
