The second (final) placement is a 100-day placement. This placement will provide the opportunity for you to:

• Undertake direct practice with service users and carers which further develop their communication skills. You should be able to use more autonomy and professional judgment, under supervision, but not hold case responsibility including responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
• Work with more complex casework including assessment, case planning, intervention and review, including those challenging situations where risk is present.
• To practice in a different setting with a different service user and/or carer group, including vulnerable groups.
• To apply further social work law and relevant social work knowledge, concepts, theory and research. You will be encouraged to apply evidence-based methods of intervention and develop skills to equip yourself once qualified.
• To work in accordance with Social Work Professional Regulator’s standards and codes of conduct and behaviours.
• To develop and demonstrate capabilities in accordance with the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) at the end of the last placement. By the end of last placement/the completion of qualifying programmes, newly qualified social workers should have demonstrated the knowledge, skills and values to work with a range of user groups, and the ability to undertake a range of tasks at a foundation level, the capacity to work with more complex situations; they should be able to work more autonomously, whilst recognising that the final decision will still rest with their supervisor; they will seek appropriate support and supervision.
• We make every effort to negotiate with our placement hosts to provide a range of learning experiences relevant to your needs in order to prepare you for practice after your training. You will be advised to maintain the relevant professional standards and conduct at all times to ensure client confidentiality wherever you practice your skills.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 200 hours of work. This breaks down into about 90 hours of contact time and about 110 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2021/22. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
