Spring teaching

This module investigates the information flows, institutional relations and professional practices that characterise contemporary global news production. It offers a critical consideration of the economics, culture, politics and sociology of news production on a global, scale. The module covers a range of topics:

• different news media systems
• global news flows
• institutional and professional issues in international news reporting
• the impact of technological change on international journalism.

Among the more recent developments, the module explores the emergence of new approaches to news reporting within:

• slow journalism
• positive journalism
• constructive journalism.

You will also investigate the extent to which the audiences of global news might constitute alternative news networks and a putative global public sphere. New technologies and social media networks have also transformed the way news is made, disseminated and consumed. This transformation raises fundamental questions about the nature and value of news in contemporary societies.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 11 hours of contact time and about 289 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
