Autumn teaching

This module provides an important foundation, introducing you to key issues, concepts and theories related to ‘governance’. It helps you to understand why it has become such an important but contested issue in practical development discourse.

We discuss:

• the nature of the state
• the relationship between the state, the market and civil society
• the impact of globalisation on state authority.

You’ll be able to appreciate what’s involved in ‘doing political analysis’. You’ll also be able to think more comprehensively and consistently about how politics affects public policies in the development field.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 44 hours of contact time and about 256 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2022/23. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
