Are you interested in knowing the causes and potential solutions to some of the most pressing problems of our time?

Why do some countries grow fast while others fall behind? Will extreme poverty be eradicated in 20 years? What can be done to eliminate hunger?

We give you an introduction to economics applied to international development. It’s organised around the following themes:

• economic growth
• rural development
• finance
• food
• institutions
• international trade.

There are no prerequisites for attending this course, but some basic algebra and statistics are used in the lectures and seminars.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 44 hours of contact time and about 256 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2022/23. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
