Ethics and Normativity (859V7A)

Autumn teaching

This module will provide a detailed examination of current research relating to ethics and normativity as undertaken by faculty members in the department from both the analytic and the continental traditions.

You'll be able to explore your own research interests in relation to the diverse current perspectives offered by faculty, and will be able to write your research paper in the area that interests you most.

Specific topics will vary according to the research of the specific faculty members teaching the module.

Possible topics may be drawn from:

  • applied ethics
  • normative ethics
  • meta-ethics
  • norms of thought
  • norms of language
  • social norms
  • political norms
  • the writings of historical figures concerned with these topics, such as Aristotle, Hegel, Kant and Plato (for example).

Time will be given to helping you develop your own research.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 278 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
