Space, Place and Screen Media (895P4)

How does the moving image engage with different types of space and place, from global cities to rural landscapes, from iconic architecture to domestic interiors? This module introduces students to the ‘spatial turn’ in film and media studies. You will investigate cinema and screen media via a range of critical approaches to space and place, including mapping, architecture, and landscape, and explore the intersections between space, place and identity on- and off-screen. You will consider the geographies of media production and engage with topics such as globalization, gentrification, ecocriticism, the ‘smart city’ and the ‘right to the city’. You will study a range of films, television series, and digital screen media, and analyse the shifting spaces of consumption, from the movie theatre to the portable screen. Core readings will be drawn from a range of disciplines including film studies, media studies, geography, architecture, and visual culture.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 278 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
This module is running in the academic year 2020/21. We also plan to offer it in future academic years.
