This scholarship, awarded as a £10,000 tuition fee reduction, is available to applicants applying to study a Masters in SPRU. It is awarded in memory of pioneering Founder of SPRU and its first Director, Chris Freeman.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must have accepted an offer of a full time place on one of the following Masters courses in SPRU:

You are not eligible for this scholarship if you already have another Sussex scholarship.

How to apply

You must apply for this scholarship after you accept an offer of a place on an eligible course.

You also need to provide a statement of academic interests when you apply. We assess this statement on how well you demonstrate the following:

  • clear and specific goals with what you aim to do after you finish your Masters
  • significant work experience or extra-curricular activities related to your chosen Masters

Chris Freeman (1921 – 2010) was an English economist and the founder and first Director of SPRU, the Science Policy Research Unit, at the University of Sussex. One of the most eminent researchers in innovation studies, he specialised in the economics of innovation and technical change and, alongside colleagues, founded 'Research Policy', the leading journal in its field.
