Applications are invited to join the Sussex experimental particle physics team working on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The student will work under the main supervision of Dr Kate Shaw.

The Sussex ATLAS group has had a long standing and significant involvement in the final state top-antitop plus vector boson analyses to search for New Physics beyond the Standard Model. The focus of the PhD project will be to significantly contribute to these efforts using ATLAS Run-3 data of the LHC expected to start taking data in 2022. The successful applicant will be trained in advanced analysis techniques and in data science, such as in machine learning, and apply them to develop dedicated analyses. The student will spend a fraction of their time on technical tasks that are well aligned with Sussex’s institutional responsibility on the ATLAS trigger, and working in operations in the control room of the ATLAS detector at CERN. The student will also have the opportunity to be trained in world leading science communication and outreach, specialising in Open Science and Open Data, and have the opportunity to develop and implement innovative international outreach programmes.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, at least a UK upper second class degree (or non-UK equivalent qualification) in Physics, or a closely-related area, or else a lower second class degree followed by a relevant Master's degree.
