Sussex Graduate Scholarship (2017)

The University is delighted to offer an unlimited number of scholarships to encourage high achieving Sussex undergraduates to stay with us to study for a Masters degree. The scholarships are available to UK, EU and international students graduating in 2017 who have accepted a full-time place on a Masters course at Sussex commencing in 2017. Students who graduate with a first-class honours degree are eligible for a £5,000 scholarship and students who graduate with an upper second-class honours degree are eligible for a £3,500 scholarship.

Applicants

  • All University of Sussex undergraduates (UK, EU and non-EU) who graduate in 2017 and progress immediately onto an eligible full-time Masters course in 2017 are eligible (see below for list of eligible courses);
  • You must apply for a Masters course and receive and accept an offer of a place;
  • To be eligible for a £5,000 scholarship you must graduate with a first-class honours degree;
  • To be eligible for a £3,500 scholarship you must graduate with an upper second-class honours degree;
  • You must meet all the University's general entrance requirements.

Courses

The scholarship relates to all full-time taught Masters degree courses at the University of Sussex (e.g. MA, MSc, LLM) excluding the following courses:

  • Postgraduate diplomas (including Common Professional Examination (CPE), Law and Economics)
  • LLM in Corruption, Law and Governance (delivered in Qatar)
  • Masters degrees in Social Work (if receiving a bursary)
  • Childhood and Youth Studies MA
  • PGCE courses and schools direct teaching courses
  • MA degrees in IDS apart from MA Gender and Development
  • Masters students funded by the research councils (e.g. those receiving ESRC 1+3 funding are not eligible).

How to apply

You must apply for admission to an eligible Masters course via the University's PG Apply online application system. If you are made an offer of a place, there will be an online scholarship declaration on PG Apply as part of the acceptance process. You must submit this declaration before you register on your chosen Masters, in order to receive the scholarship.

Sponsors

If you accept a Sussex Graduate Scholarship you may be required to undertake occasional promotional or support duties for the University of Sussex at times agreed between yourself and the University (e.g. providing copy for the prospectus or web page). Schools of study may also have specific duties they wish you to assist with.

No, the Sussex Graduate Scholarship can only be held at the University of Sussex.

2. If I am a current Sussex student am I eligible?

Yes, all current Sussex students (UK/EU and non-EU) are eligible for this award if graduating in 2017 and progressing directly to a full-time, eligible Masters degree in 2017.

3. I am an overseas student for fee purposes am I eligible to apply?

Yes, all current Sussex students (UK/EU and non-EU) are eligible for this award if graduating in 2017 and progressing directly to a full-time, eligible Masters degree in 2017.

4. If I am offered a place on a Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) Masters am I eligible?

Yes, all BSMS students on Masters courses accredited by the University of Sussex are eligible to apply for the Sussex Graduate Scholarship in 2017/18

5. If I am offered a Sussex Graduate Scholarship but defer my place at Sussex, can the scholarship be carried over to the next year?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to carry over the scholarship to another year. However, if you intend to defer and hold a first-class honours degree from Sussex and meet our entrance requirements you may be eligible for the Chancellors Masters Scholarship.

6. If I apply for a part-time Masters degree am I eligible?

No, the Sussex Graduate Scholarship is only available for full-time study. The scholarship is intended to enable students to complete their Masters course within one year, by reducing the fee to approximately the equivalent of the part-time fee for the first year. This enables students to save the living expenses that would otherwise be incurred in a second year and to complete the degree more quickly.

7. If I have funding from another source can I also receive the Sussex Graduate Scholarship?

Yes - the scholarships are available to funded and self-financing students. However, there are some exceptions:

If you receive an additional fee waiver from a School or department at the University the total amount of the combined fee waivers cannot exceed the total amount of the tuition fee.

8. Can I apply if I only intend to undertake Masters level study and do not intend to pursue doctoral study?

Yes, the Sussex Graduate Scholarship seeks to reward excellence at undergraduate level.

9. Is the Sussex Graduate Scholarship available to study at research (PhD) level?

No - however, there are a range of PhD scholarships for research students and you can find details on our Funding Database.

10. Do I need to apply for the Sussex Graduate Scholarship?

There is no formal application process for the scholarship. However, if you are made an offer of a place, there will be an online scholarship declaration on PG Apply as part of the acceptance process. You must submit this declaration in order to receive the scholarship.

11. How will I receive the Sussex Graduate Scholarship?

The scholarship of either £5,000 or £3,500 will be awarded as a tuition fee reduction when you register.

Timetable

The deadline to accept an offer of a place on an eligible Masters course and submit the online declaration has been extended to 21 September 2017. You must allow sufficient time for the Masters application to be considered before the deadline.
