Student Support Unit

The Student Support Unit is a team of specialist Disability Advisors and administrators. We provide confidential information and advice to current and future students on disability-related study support and accessing disability-related funding.

Reasonable adjustments

Our Advisors put reasonable adjustments in place for students to help remove barriers to study related to the impact of disabilities, long-term health conditions including mental health conditions, autism spectrum conditions, and specific learning differences.

If a student feels they have support needs related to a health condition but are unsure of their diagnosis, or whether it meets the threshold of a disability, we also welcome them to get in touch to speak with an Advisor. Find out more about who we can help.

Reasonable adjustments include: extra time and rest breaks in exams; a penalty waiver to allow submission during lateness periods without penalty; extensions to coursework deadlines, and a range of other adjustments. Adjustments are made in response to the needs of the individual student.

To put support in place we need to liaise with specific parts of the university, so we need students to complete our consent form before we can arrange their course support.  To enable us to organise support, please send us your evidence and completed Consent Form, and return them to disabilitysupport@sussex.ac.uk

Alternatively, you could drop them into the Unit, or attend one of our drop-in sessions, which operate daily between 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm.

We also provide resources and guidance for university staff on reasonable adjustments and supporting students with disabilities.

Drop-in sessions

For information on accessing support at the University of Sussex, attend one of our drop-in sessions.

.

  • Just let reception know that you would like to see someone in the SSU drop-in and they will put your name on the list for the sessions taking place at that time.
  • You may have to wait a short while if the advisors are with students but the friendly reception team will let you know if this is the case.
  • If you are unable to wait you can come to the next drop-in session during that day.
  • Drop-in sessions are held with advisors who can answer questions you may have, provide the most appropriate advice and guidance and identify the best next steps to take.
  • Depending on your support needs, you may be allocated an Advisor to work with on a longer term basis.

You can also tell us about your disability or learning difference by phone or email.
