Hope and Fear: Cultures of Climate Change
Tuesday 29 March 13:15 until 15:00
University of Sussex Campus : Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts
Part of the series: Sussex Festival of Ideas

Students from the new Sussex Liberal Arts degree convene speakers from across disciplines at Sussex and beyond, to examine key topics around the subject of climate change. We’ll think about how culture and knowledge, especially the knowledge of indigenous peoples, frame ideas of ‘nature’ and how ecological systems interact with social systems. Where does the social environment end and the natural one begin?
We will think too about the roles of Western industrial development and colonisation in the long history of climate change and ask how environmentalism provides ‘hope’ as well as ‘fear’ in a world in which climate problems seem so entrenched.
