A PhD student in the School of Life Sciences is hosting two online discussions to share the successes and challenges experienced by a panel of BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) scientists, taking place on 14 and 21 July.
The discussions have been organised by Kamillia Kasbi as part of her project aiming to increase visibility of BAME role models in science, which is supported by the Sussex Researcher Development Programme.
The panels will seek to highlight their success stories as BAME individuals in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), discuss the challenges they have faced, and open up conversations around what universities can do to improve the experience and support offered to BAME students.
Kamillia said: “Countless data has shown that a student’s race and ethnicity can significantly affect their degree outcomes and experiences at university. Of the disparities that exist within higher education, the gap between the likelihood of white students and students from Black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds getting a first- or upper-second-class degree is striking.
“Universities need to make more of an effort to actively encourage and remove barriers for BAME students to pursue further academic/career opportunities in STEM. I hope that by hosting events such as these, our students will see that there are many opportunities for them after they graduate.”
The My Story: Being BAME in STEM, the challenges and successes panels will see the scientists share their own experiences and there will be opportunities for students to ask them questions in an open discussion.
