Resources strongly correlate with learning outcomes, yet the mechanism of how resources affect teaching and learning remains contested. My research focuses on how one such mechanism is schooling timetables, and how their properties allow schools as institutions to protect or erode teaching and learning opportunities for their students. Far from being a banal, localized bureaucratic document, timetables form the heartbeat of a school, and erratic rhythms in that heartbeat make for an ailing body pedagogic. The resources schools have access to directly affect whether the timetable can be stabilised, sustained and legitimated as the core rhythm organising lessons and activities. This talk will investigate this research further, constructing an argument for a baseline of adequate provisioning for all schools if teaching and learning opportunities are to be realised for all.
