Dr Gavin Lockhart is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Accredited Interpersonal Therapy Practitioner.  Gavin has over 20 years' experience working with children and young people with mental health problems, and their families.  The majority of this experience has been within specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), and included both team lead and area lead psychologist roles.  Over the past ten years Gavin has also run a successful private practice, providing assessments and therapeutic interventions to both young people and adults.  He has been an honorary lecturer on the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology at the University of Southampton for the past 12 years, provided sessional lectures on Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) at the University of Surrey, and has worked on secondment to the University of Reading as part of the first-wave of the Children and Young People’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Programme (CYP-IAPT).  Gavin is passionate about increasing early access to high quality, evidence-based, collaborative interventions for children and young people.  In 2017 he received the Innovation in Practice Award by the Faculty of Children, Young People and their Families (part of the British Psychological Society's Division of Clinical Psychology), in recognition of the innovations and exemplary practice pioneered by the PG Cert in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions for Children and Young People.  Gavin is a reviewer for the National Institute of Health Research.  From June 2019 he will be working for Health Education England a day a week as project lead for a scoping project on the next steps in delivering CYP Mental Health Workforce requirements across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.


Dr Gavin Lockhart works for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT) as a Principal Clinical Psychologist: Training Specialist.  He is based in the Post-Graduate Courses in Therapeutic Practice team within the School of Psychology.  This team delivers clinical programmes run in partnership between the University of Sussex and SPFT.  Gavin is the course leader for the Post-Graduate Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions for Children and Young People and contributes to the teaching, supervision and marking on the Post-Gradute Diploma in Psychological Therapies and Post-Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice.



  • Publication and circulation of quantitative and qualitative analyses from a year-one pilot of clinical placements for within schools in Sussex for students on the Post-Graduate Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions for Children and Young People (2017)
  • Project lead for a phase two pilot and report write up, publication and circulation from school/FE college based placements for trainees on the above PG Cert within the Kent region.  This project was run in collaboration with the Association of South East Colleges (AOSEC) and The Kennel Academies Trust (TKAT) and attracted £80,000 funding from Health Education England (HEE).  This project included funded places for 12 students on the course (2017-2018)
  • Project lead for phase three school/HE college based placements across Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Wessex, attracting £200,000 funding from Health Education England (HEE) and including 27 funded places on the course (2018-2019)
  • Joint project lead on new mental health workforce preceptorship project, attracting over £800,000 funding (2018-ongoing)
  • Developing a new Children's Wellbeing Practitioner pathway through the existing PG Cert and a new Post-Graduate Diploma in Education Mental Health Practice in line with the Children and Young People's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (CYP-IAPT) and Government Green Paper "Transforming Mental Health Provision for CYP", in collaboration with Health Education England (HEE).  This project brings the University of Sussex online as one of only eight providers of these trainings from September 2019 and will attract a minimum of 30 recruit-to-train posts for prospective students per year between 2019 and 2020
  • Secondment to Health Education England as project lead for scoping project on CYP mental health workforce scoping project June-December 2020
