Sussex joins ‘Trans Rights are Human Rights’ initiative
The University of Sussex has joined a nationwide initiative to highlight support for trans rights in the UK.
Under the message “Trans Rights Are Human Rights”, we are joining other higher education institutions as well as organisations in the public and private sectors to show that we value trans people as our employees, colleagues, students and customers.
Organisers Stonewall have created a dedicated website, with details of national organisations who have also signed up. You can follow the initiative on social media by using the #TransRightsAreHumanRights hashtag.
This opportunity to speak up in support of trans and non-binary staff, students and allies at the University of Sussex highlights work already underway on our institutional LGBT+ action plan, which outlines the next steps to promote LGBT+ equality that the University will be focusing on over the next three years.
The action plan, which was published in July following consultation with the LGBT+ Staff Network and the Trans and non-Binary Staff Network, brings together a range of institutional-level actions and initiatives.
It will underpin our work to become a Stonewall Top 100 Employer by 2025. Much of this work is in response to feedback that we received earlier this year following our first submission to Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index. Due to the significant challenges that organisations are facing because of Covid-19, this Index will next be published in 2022.
As part of ongoing work on our action plan, we are developing a Transitioning at Work Policy and related guidance for staff and managers, which we are aiming to launch in the autumn term.
We are also in the process of reviewing other human resources policies to ensure they use gender-neutral and inclusive language.
In addition, the EDI Unit have been working with colleagues in Human Resources on a staff self-service portal to capture more detailed equality-monitoring data, which we are aiming to launch in the new term.
