A new agreement betweeen the seven sixth form colleges in Sussex and the three higher education institutions will help local students to continue their studies within the region.

From next year, students at sixth form colleges in East and West Sussex who apply for degree courses at the Universities of Brighton and Sussex and the Chichester Institute of Higher Education can be sure that they will receive a conditional offer of a place.

The three higher education institutions will offer a place to any student applying from the Sussex sixth form colleges: Brighton and Hove Sixth Form College (BHASVIC); the College of Richard Collyer, Horsham; Bexhill College; Haywards Heath College; Park College, Eastbourne; Varndean College, Brighton and Worthing Sixth Form College. Students will be expected to achieve the standard entry qualification for the course, but they will benefit from the certainty that a guarantee of an offer brings.

Commenting on the benefits of this partnership, Colin Brooks, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sussex said: "I'm delighted by this initiative from the Sussex sixth-form colleges. At a time of some uncertainty, the scheme should help allay the anxieties of sixth formers and encourage access to higher education of top quality. We look forward to further collaboration."

This agreement reflects broader expansion of collaborative partnerships across the education sectors in Sussex. The next aim is to extend this agreement to further education colleges and schools with sixth forms. It is also planned to develop closer links between the curriculum at sixth form and higher education courses in such subject areas as science and technology, engineering, performing arts, sports and leisure and business.
