Fifty students from schools all over the UK will be finding out how fireflies glow and how to turn copper into "gold" at a residential chemistry camp at the University of Sussex (June 28 - July 1).

The 15-year-olds will also discover the science behind putty and slime and will be designing mini crash helmets.

The purpose of the camp, which is run and organised by Salter's, one of the UK's oldest livery companies, is to enable young people to participate in the fun of chemistry and to motivate them to develop both an awareness of and a long-term interest in the subject through an action-packed week's programme.

The course will be supervised by Sussex chemistry professor Norman Billingham, who said "This is a fantastic way to get young people enthusiastic about chemistry., Sussex is a great inspiration to budding scientists, with its history of two chemistry Nobel prizewinners, Professor Sir Harry Kroto and Sir John Cornforth, as well as the department's continuing success in university league tables. This year we were ranked second in The Guardian and sixth in The Times."

He added that this year's students will also benefit from using new teaching labs, completed this year at a cost of £1.2 million.

In addition students will be able to see chemistry applied in industry by visiting the GlaxoSmithKline site. But it's not all chemistry, there is a varied social programme for the Campers including ten-pin bowling and an Olympics sports evening!

The Salters' Chemistry Camp at The University of Sussex is sponsored by: - Pfizer Limited; The Association for the British Pharmaceutical Industry; Institution of Chemical Engineers; The Royal Society and The Royal Society of Chemistry.
