Snowboarding twins get first class degrees

Twins studying at the University of Sussex, who share a passion for snowboarding and are working in the same office together, have both achieved first class honours degrees.

Joanne and David Huddie, 21, from Sway in the New Forest, will receive the double honour at the University's graduation ceremony to be held on 18 July in the Brighton Dome. Joanne received a first in Social Anthropology, with David getting the same result in Artificial Intelligence with Management Studies.

The twins are "amazed and chuffed" at both gaining first class honours degrees, especially since Joanne picked David's degree subject for him: "I found a course I wanted to do and Dave didn't have a clue so as a joke me and my mum looked through the prospectus and found a course he might want to do. It was Artificial Intelligence, he decided he liked it and now he's got a first."

The pair are also keen snowboarders. Introduced to the sport by a mutual friend, they regularly go to the French Alps or Andorran Pyrenees to play. "We both like going off and doing adventurous things," says Joanne.

Despite also working together in the University's Housing Office, Joanne and David don't do everything together. "Live with Joanne? No way! We'd fall straight back into typical brother and sister squabbling," says David. "Actually, living apart probably makes us better mates."

After graduation they also intend to do separate things, although both are taking some time out after studying. Joanne will be snowboarding in the Alps and David intends to head off to Costa Rica to work on an organic farm.
