University of Sussex student wins summer internship in Washington DC

Hermione Holland, a final year student in International Relations and Development Studies at the University of Sussex, has won a summer internship in the office of a US Senator in Washington DC.

The three-month internship is organised by the English-Speaking Union, an educational charity based in London that promotes the use of English throughout the world.

"Since September 11th, we have been shown that whether you agree with American policy or not, the fact is that Britain and America are interrelated," says Hermione.

Hermione is one of only 10 students to be selected from over 150 applicants nationwide.

"I'm hoping to work on trade issues working with think-tanks and non-governmental organisations," says Hermione, who has previously worked for a non-governmental organisation in Ecuador and who represented the organisation at a UN meeting in New York in October 2000.

Hermione is organising a music concert in May to help raise the £3000 necessary for the internship. She is also currently seeking financial support from local businesses or individuals.
