Stars Celebrate University's 40th Anniversary

Lord Attenborough, newscaster Dermot Murnaghan and Nobel prize-winner Sir Harry Kroto will be among those attending a special event this week to mark the University of Sussex's 40th anniversary.

More than 450 former students, current students, academics, staff and people connected with the University have been invited to a concert and summer buffet on the Falmer campus on Thursday, July 5, 2001.

The guest list includes the University's chancellor Lord Attenborough, four former vice-chancellors of the University, local MPs David Lepper and Ivor Caplin, alumni such as the broadcasters Dermot Murnaghan and Simon Fanshawe, and the distinguished Sussex academics Professor Sir Harry Kroto and Professor John Maynard Smith.

The evening will begin with a recital in the Gardner Arts Centre by the string ensemble of Trinity College of Music, who will play a selection of works by Mozart, Mahler and Dvorak. This will be followed by the buffet.

University registrar Neil Gershon said: "We wanted to involve people from all areas of the University community, and those outside of it who have supported us, in celebrating the past 40 years."
