Professor David Clary
Professor David Clary, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Commonwealth Office, is to be made Doctor of Science at the University of Sussex's winter graduation ceremony on Friday, 28 January, 2011.
Professor Clary, who studied Theoretical Chemistry at Sussex as an undergraduate during the 1970s, has a particular interest in developing the methods of quantum mechanics to predict the rates of chemical reactions - a subject that underlies much of modern molecular science.
In 1997 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for his outstanding contributions to this field. He has also been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science.
He has received several medals of the Royal Society of Chemistry including this year's Liversidge Award for his many seminal contributions in theoretical chemistry.
Currently President of Magadalen College Oxford, Professor Clary also holds visiting professorships to many world-renowned laboratories.
