Oldemiro excels with help from international study course
Angolan student Oldemiro Sequesseque found a second home in Brighton when he was selected to study in the UK after a national hunt for his country's best students.
Oldemiro, who graduates with a degree in Business and Management Studies today (Friday, 23 July 2010 at 10am), was sponsored by Angola's state-owned oil company Sonangol to study abroad, and chose to come to the University of Sussex.
Oldemiro says: "I chose Sussex because it is among the best Universities in the UK and in Europe, the course was challenging and because Brighton has a unique atmosphere!
"I really felt at home on the campus, where staff were so friendly and helpful. And my course gave me great confidence."
To qualify for the Business and Management course Oldemiro spent a year preparing for academic study and learning English in the International Study Centre at Sussex, which is run by Study Group International.
Oldemiro is one of 22 students that make up the first cohort to graduate following a foundation year and three- year degree course at Sussex. Two of the students will be awarded Firsts. The international students will be reunited at a special reception in Brighton Pavilion on Thursday (22 July).
Oldemiro says: "It wasn't easy, but worthwhile in the end! My advice to future international students would be to enjoy the countryside and the beach, but keep organised and focused on your studies so you get life-long benefit."
Oldemiro will now be returning to Angola to work for Sonangol, but hopes to come back to Sussex to take up a place he has been offered to study for a Masters degree.
