The University of Sussex has been ranked among the UK's top 20 institutions in the Independent newspaper's Complete University Guide 2010-2011, published today (20 May 2010).

Sussex is placed 19th overall, up six places from last year's ranking, with the University score improving particularly in student satisfaction, graduate prospects and for investment in student services and facilities.

Sussex is ranked among the top 10 universities nationally for the following subjects: American Studies (3rd); Italian (4th); History of Art, Architecture and Design (5th); Social Work (6th); Anthropology (8th); Communication and Media Studies (9th); Drama, Dance and Cinematics (10th); and Sociology (10th).

Subjects appearing in the top 20 are: Psychology (11th); History (15th); Biological Sciences (15th); Mathematics (15th); Philosophy (15th); Spanish (16th); Politics (17th); Chemistry (18th); English (18th); Geography (20th); Physics (20th); and German (20th).

Subjects inside the top 25 include: French (21st); Law (21st); Education (21st); Business Studies (23rd); Medicine (23rd); Economics (24th); Mechanical Engineering (25th); and Music (25th).

University of Sussex Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, welcomed the latest ranking, saying: "I believe this climb up the table reflects the work that we started three years ago to improve the student experience in the round - work that is clearly making a difference.

"Our success also reflects on the positive effect of new schemes such as Sussex Plus, which will enable our graduates to demonstrate what they have achieved in all of their academic and extra-curricular activities at Sussex.

"Current developments, including a major new teaching building opening in the summer, a radically overhauled library, a new creative arts centre for 2011 and more placement opportunities for our students, will further enhance the experience for future generations of students at Sussex."
