University of Sussex to open city shopfront

The University of Sussex has announced plans to open an information centre in Brighton, providing a permanent presence in the city and a showcase for its teaching, research and student activities.

Situated near Sainsbury’s on Lewes Road and opening in late autumn, the premises will provide a shopfront for the University’s range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, its world-class research expertise and displays of student work.   Information will be available on the University’s first-generation scholars’ scheme and its wide range of international activities.

With a public performance programme due to launch in spring 2016, the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts will also be a major focus.

Existing and prospective students, parents, teachers and the local community will be welcome to come into the Lewes Road premises for University news and updates, to discuss student accommodation, browse the displays, pick-up prospectuses and find out about future campus events.

A programme of themed exhibitions and events is also planned at the premises.

University of Sussex Registrar, John Duffy said:  “We have been considering a city presence for some time.  Our trial pop-up shop in the spring was a great success and attracted positive feedback from everyone who visited.  We have therefore decided to take a permanent presence and Lewes Road with its busy location is an ideal spot.

“There’s always a lot going on at the University which we’re keen to share with the local community.  We wanted to provide an alternative place for people to come to find out more and to meet with us.”
