3D Modelling and Animation (G6079)

Spring teaching

Producing high quality content is one of the stumbling blocks towards successful 3D applications, and a skill which is highly demanded by related industries. The current module will make use of industry standard software, to cover most aspects related to the production pipeline of 3D content. These will include:

  • 3D modelling and texturing, allowing candidates to produce their own 3D geometries, adjust its material properties and apply appropriate texturing (colour maps, specular maps, bump maps).
  • Rigging and animation, enabling motion on the content produces. Principles of animation will also be addressed, ensuring the animations produced meet industry standards.
  • Exporting the content produced to external programming suites (e.g. Unity). Projects making use of 3D content often involve various programming suites for different stages of the project (e.g. 3DS Max for content production; Unity as a game engine). Candidates will learn how to migrate contents across tools, to enable control of the content produced from external suites.

This module is 150 hours of work. This breaks down into 44 hours of contact time and 106 hours of independent study.
