You said, we listened

Your feedback is very important to us and we use it to continually improve the Library.

Summer opening hours

You said: "Please open later over the summer vacation."

We are really pleased to be able to tell you that from this summer vacation, the Library will stay open untill 11:00 pm, Mondays to Fridays.

You asked: For a microwave so that visitors can heat up their own food and eat it in the cafe.

We now have a microwave in the cafe for visitor use.

More study space

You asked: For more study spaces in the Library

We are delighted to announce that:

  • The area previously occupied by the BLDS Library is being refurbished as a new study area with over 100 spaces, and is due to open in September 2019.
  • A pop-up study space with WIfi will be set up in Mandela Hall during the busy assessment period between the 6th and 10th of May, opening from 7 am until midnight.
  • Additional study spaces will be open in the Careers and Employability seminar rooms on the ground floor of the Library from the 15th to the 26th of April and the 14th to the 31st of May.
  • If you're still looking for a study space why not try the Sussex spacefinder app.

Have you seen the new outdoor study spaces across Campus?

Recycling bins

You said: "I'm trying to reduce my environmental impact, can I recycle more in the Library?"

The Library has created a Green Group to look at ways to reduce our impact as a departement. You can contact them at

  • Working with Sussex Estate Facilitites, we have provided more than 20 extra recycling bins for paper, cans, and hard plastic bottles throughout the Library.
  • We now have a battery collection bin in the vending area, which accepts all types of batteries including those from electronics such as mobile phones and laptops.
  • There is a crisp packet recycling bin in the Library cafe.
  • We do not allow disposable cups in the Library. As an added incentive to bring a reuseable cup, the Library cafe offers a 30p discount to anyone buying a hot drink in one.
  • We will shortly be introducing a collection point for recycling used stationery.

Family room

You said: "I have nowhere to study where my child can play safely."

The Library now has a Family Room, with a play area, toys and books, a feeding corner with privacy screen and study desks with access to power sockets and wifi. Find it on the first floor.
