The University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Shenzhen campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK-SZ), paving the way for future faculty exchange, research and teaching collaborations and opportunities for doctoral mobility.

Sussex delegation signs CUHK-SZ MoU, ShenzhenProfessor Clare Mackie, Professor Cherith Moses, Xi Li (out of shot) and Chris Wellings from the University of Sussex join counterparts at CUHK-SZ for a formal signing of the Memorandum of Understanding.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clare Mackie, signed the institutional agreement at CUHK-SZ’s campus on 7 July – helping to strengthen ties between Sussex and the Pearl River Delta region of South China.

A University delegation accompanied Professor Mackie as she met with members of the executive group at CUHK-SZ to discuss the development of the site and further opportunities for cooperation in teaching and research.

Delegation member and Director of International Recruitment & Development (Social Science), Professor Cherith Moses said: “Creating strategic international partnerships is an essential element of our Strategic Plan.

"We’re working hard to foster collaboration with leading, research-intensive institutions like CUHK. It’s work like this to support the internationalisation of research and teaching programmes - and break down barriers to staff and student mobility – that allows Sussex to enjoy a reputation as a truly global institution.”

The delegation was also provided with information on regional economic and educational development by representatives from the Shenzhen Municipal Government, including Deputy Secretary-General - and Sussex alumnus - Mr Guoqiang Huang.

CUHK-SZ is the second campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, located 20 miles away from the original site. It was formally established in 2014 in collaboration with Shenzhen University.

The campus is home to the growing Schools of Management and Economics, Science and Engineering and Humanities and Social Science - with plans to offer 23 majors by 2022. Research strengths are beginning to emerge in a number of areas, including finance, robotics and biomedical science.
