The scheme was launched with the aims of substantially increasing the number of Sussex undergraduate students who study abroad, creating graduates with an international outlook and enhancing the international reputation of the University and its schools.

Applications were reviewed by a panel chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clare Mackie.

"The response from faculty to this new scheme was striking and highlights the commitment to and enthusiasm for Study Abroad at Sussex" said Victoria Shaw, Assistant Head of International Liaison.

Applications were submitted from across the University, with awards made to:

  • Dr Sharif Mowlabocus, from the School of Media, Film and Music, who will work with faculty at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on an innovative new undergraduate degree with Mandatory Year Abroad;
  • Professor Joann McGregor, who will lead a visit to the University of Ghana to establish a new field course for undergraduate students from across the School of Global Studies;
  • Dr Susie Scott, who will increase the number of Law, Politics and Sociology students studying in the Nordic region through site visits to eight new and existing partners, including the universities of Lund, Copenhagen and Helsinki;
  • Professor Xavier Calmet, who will visit Nanyang Technological University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Fudan University, with the aim of promoting existing exchange opportunities and offering new destinations for Physics and Astronomy students in China, Hong Kong and Singapore;
  • Professor Susan Millns, who aims to increase the number of Law students taking a Voluntary Year Abroad. Professor Millns will oversee visits from six Sussex Law School faculty to a number of prominent European partners, including Charles University and Bocconi;
  • Professor William Hughes, who will visit Egypt, Zambia and South Africa to set up student exchanges with leading African universities and develop field courses in coral reef ecology and African megafauna zoology (to be offered to undergraduate students on Biology, Zoology and Ecology, Conservation and Environment degrees); and
  • Dr Konstantin Blyuss, who will work with colleagues to further develop and promote student exchange agreements for Mathematics and Physical Sciences students in Berlin. Visits will be undertaken to Humboldt, Free and Technical universities. Dr Blyuss also hopes to identify opportunities for Sussex students to participate in part of the programme of the Berlin Mathematics School.

The awards were financed by the University’s International Partnership Development Fund and will complement the work of Sussex Abroad, which currently manages over 150 exchange partnerships.
