Training to Teach with Sussex during the Covid pandemic

During the academic year to date, our 3-week induction course has been taught 60% online and 40% face to face following stringent health and safety regulations.

We have 326 Sussex Primary and Secondary PGCE and School Direct trainees placed successfully inschools. All trainees are in school Monday to Thursday each week following the health, safety, and social distancing policies of their individual placement schools. University training is held each Friday on campus face to face.

We offer four main routes into teaching for graduates:

We offer four main routes into teaching for graduates:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • School Direct (Training) Programme
  • School Direct (Salaried) Programme
  • Early Years MA with Qualified Teacher Status.

You can choose to take a Primary, Early Years or Secondary route, with a wide range of subject specialisms available. Depending on your subject you could be eligible to receive a tax free bursary of up to £24,000, or a scholarship of up to £26,000, or earn a salary while you teach. On our government-funded Early Years MA there is no fee to pay for UK/EU students.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKEs)

Everyone begins their training with different gaps in their subject knowledge. Many trainee teachers take a SKE course with us in preparation for their PGCE or School Direct Course. These courses are designed to be flexible; they can be tailored to meet your specific study requirements, and can be planned around your commitments.

SKE courses are funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, and you may be eligible for a tax free £175 weekly bursary whilst studying your SKE.
