About Media, Journalism and Cultural Studies

We are a diverse group of academic staff, who are actively engaged in researching, writing and teaching Media, Journalism and Cultural Studies.

We ask how media and culture contribute to, and can be part of, changing life. We believe an engaged and political orientation to media research is important and helps to ensure the relevance of our research to the world.

Our staff help students develop key skills in communication, critical thinking, and working to deadline, preparing them for a range of careers including advertising, marketing, and journalism.

Our academics include journalists who have worked for media organisations including the BBC World Service and digital services (including Google). They publish journal articles, produce documentary films and work for global digital and print media organisations.

Our specialist facilities include an industry-standard broadcast studio which can be configured for TV or radio, dedicated news rooms equipped with the latest software, television and radio stations and digital media labs. Students can also join our University newspaper or radio station.

We have links with various publications, broadcasters and production companies, which helps to shape our teaching and ensure our curriculum is up to date.  We work in partnership with many of these organisations to collaborate on production, exhibitions, and research.
