Biography

Part-time Professor of Economics, University of Sussex, June 2013-

Educated at Universities of Cambridge and Sussex.

Previous academic positions: Professor of Economics, University of Nottingham (1998-2012), Professor of Economics, Queen Mary College, London (1995-98), Professor of Economics at University of Kent at Canterbury (1988-1995); other academic positions held at University of Kent at Canterbury (1977-95), University of Reading (1975-77), University of Strathclyde (1974-75), University of Addis Ababa (1972-74).

Currently also Research Fellow, Institute for Fiscal Studies; Research Associate, Centre for Economic Performance, LSE and Visiting Professor of Economics, University College, London.

Previously Member of Senior Salaries Review Body (2009-14)  and Member of NHS Pay Review Body (2003-09), Adviser to Sir Thomas Winsor's Review of the Remuneration of the Police (2011-12), Member of Senior Sector Review of police funding within the Home Office, 2016-17, Member of Fixed Cost Assessors Group examining legal fees, established by the LCJ under the chair of Lord Justice Jackson 2017.

Member, Council of Economic Advisors to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Feb 2018 - August 2019.

Past consultant to World Bank, IMF, OECD, ILO, HM Treasury, DWP, DTI and other governmental organisations; mostly on pension and labour market issues.
