University of Sussex Campus : The Terrace Room, Level 3, Bramber House
Speaker: Kalwant Bhopal
Part of the series: Inclusive Sussex
Join us for a special ‘In Conversation’ event discussing Race and Education with Kalwant Bhopal, Professor of Education and Social Justice and Director of the Centre for Research in Race and Education at the University of Birmingham.
Why is our education system unequal?
How does race play a part?
Is Britain still institutionally racist?
Education remains the most significant predictor of life opportunities in Britain. The subjects we study, the institutions we attend, and the duration of our education influence every aspect of our lives. Our careers, long-term health, wealth, and security are all shaped within the classroom.
Professor Kalwant Bhopal discusses how race continues to affect who receives the best education in Britain and who is left behind.
As a Professor of Education and Social Justice, Professor Bhopal’s research primarily focuses on the achievements and experiences of minority ethnic groups in education, exploring discourses of identity and intersectionality, and examining the lives of Black minority ethnic groups as well as the marginal position of Gypsies and Travellers.
This event will provide an insightful discussion on the key themes of her book, “Race and Education: Reproducing White Supremacy in Britain” exploring the persistent issues of racial inequity in the British education system and how they contribute to broader societal structures of white supremacy.
