Abstract NaCl and polyethylene glycol, molecular weight: 6000 (PEG 6000) were used to generate salt and water stress with water potentials of -0.7 MPa, -1.0 MPa, -1.2 MPa respectively, on which Tall Wheatgrass (Elytrigia pontica (Podp). Holub), from accessions of the south-center area of Cordoba (Argentina), was sown and grown. 21 days after sowing the grains, final germination values root length, number of roots, and root/ shoot ratic were registered according to the ISTA rules. The results obtained indicate significant differences in treatments with NaCl in germination, root length and shoot length; the effects produced by PEG 6000 on these parameters were smaller. Treatment with NaCl affects more root growth than shoot growth, and this effect is the opposite of that produced by water stress. The final germination count is an important parameter for the selection of material tolerant to both stresses; root length can also constitute, in our opinion, an important tool for the selection of material tolerant to salinity. The other variables analyzed (shoot length and, number of roots) are shown to be unreliable selection indicators.
